Four year olds have no real concept of time. For example, Dave-o refers to anything that has already happened (in the past)as occurring yesterday. Because of this lack of understanding, I have had a hard time explaining to him when the baby will come. I started out telling him "4 more months" or "3 more months", but this didn't work. Dave-o would watch the clock and come running to me when he saw the number 3 or 4 and say, "Mom, it's been 3 minutes. Is Lonetta coming?" Adorable right?
After this I thought I was being clever when I came up with the idea to tell Dave-o that Lonnie will come after Halloween. He seemed to like this explanation and no longer bothered me with what the clocks were telling him.
Now we need to fast forward to present day. While the rest of our children were at different friend parties, David and Rodney took Dave-o and Noah trick-or-treating. I stayed home to rest (my back was hurting). An hour later, a very excited little boy came running in the house calling out, "Mom! Mom! Where are you?" I thought his excitement was to show me all the candy he collected. Dave-o quickly found me laying on the couch and ran over putting his hand on my belly asking "Is your tummy hurting? Are we going to the hospital?"
I had no idea that Dave-o would take what I said quite so literally. He went on to say that Noah wanted to trick or treat a lot, but he wanted to come home because Lonetta was coming. I tried explaining to Dave-o that my tummy didn't hurt and that we'd have to wait a bit longer for her to come, but he was still stuck on the idea of Lonnie coming today. When we told him it was time for bed, Dave-o said, "No! We have to go to the hospital first!" I felt so bad disappointing him. He was finally okay with going to bed when I told him that Lonetta must need more time to get bigger.
He's such a sweet heart. This will be a fun story to tell Lonnetta when she is older. She will feel so loved knowing that her big brother was more excited about meeting his sister than getting candy.
